Even after the story was done I find myself thinking of some of the characters. It is not as simple as finding out what happened to her. This one was rich in setting, characters, and interwoven incidents that held my attention throughout. But maybe what I thought were stupid mistakes weren’t stupid or mistakes; maybe the incidents fit in the mindset of Sweden, not such a rough place as the world of American crime stories.
Was this review helpful? I want to read about SWEDISH police doing SWEDISH things like solving murders in SKANE, drinking coffee and eating sandwiches. He goes to see him along with local police officer Sgt Grace Mthembu and is given a map to the farm Inga went to; there is no sign of her but he does find two severed fingers! But here, there is something involving a wealthy black man that hypocritically puts him in bed with the evil element. What a great first episode to begin UK Wallander's fourth season (The White Lioness). Good, but I wanted more of the Swedish stuff, less of the global espionage.
5 stars!A police procedural, historical fiction and thriller wrapped into one in this the third of Henning Mankell's Kurt Wallander series.It was a long story, but fascinating all of the way through, although it dragged in parts. But I picked up this book because it was a KURT WALLANDER mystery. This book in particular focuses on how he, a small-town Swedish policeman, is faced with the fact that globalization and more porous borders is affecting his everyday practice...and possibly his ethics. He himself had spent a lot of time in Mozambique. Set at the end of South Africa’s Apartheid regime, after President de Klerk has called for an end to the racial laws governing the country and for free elections to follow, a group of Boers, Afrikaans, formed a secret committee to assassinate Nelson Mandela and create chaos in South Africa, thus allowing apartheid to continue. Take a leading British actor with a knighthood, put him in moody detective thriller, move the action to South Africa, and there you have ... a major disappointment. The Wallander stories are good mysteries in their own right, but what commends the books I'm only reviewing this one book, but I've read the entire detective series by Henning Mankell, and I am a huge fan. This book in particular focuses on how he, a small-town Swedish policeman, is faced with the fact that globalization and more porous borders is affecting his everyday practice...and possibly his ethics. I started reading his books trying to get a feel for Swedish authors and their books content as I am currently writing a novel about WWII Sweden. I'm hooked. Yes many black ANC politicians were killed during the local election but that was all done by people within the party removing their opposition and people not happy with who the party had elected to stand as Councillors.Not once was a white, Indian or Coloured person ever caught or accused of perpetrating those crimes. I had not read Henning Mankell books before and now I will read his other novels. The White Lioness is book number three in Mankell's series of crime novels Ystad detective featuring Kurt Wallander. He has written all kinds of novels, but I've focused on his mystery series featuring Swedish police officer Kurt Wallander. Was this review helpful? A very good read to me.Great storyline. Not a bad offering, but kind of far afield. The murder in the beginning is solved in the process.

'The White Lioness' is probably my favorite of all the Wallander books. The turns, twist, intertwining and ultimately the knitting together of each character is a feat accomplished by the author. The most annoying of course was the part where the female Detective mentions that a white youth had attempted to shoot a black politician. Was this review helpful?
