But at their meeting, he encounters a strange man in grey - a man with capacious pockets, bringing forth everything the nobles want, while they seem to barely notice him...I appreciated the reworking of the theme of "the deal with the devil" in this story, and I also loved the fairytale-esque elements and how they were framed with more adult themes.

He becomes engaged to a woman whom he loves greatly but his secret comes out and he is chased from the city.This is such a tiny novella and it will take you no time at all to read, and yet it is so worth reading just to learn about the author's own feelings of exile and insubstantial state. The story was overall enjoyable but it became too philosophical at the end and the conclusion was inexplicable.
