:DI read this novella because Poe was inspired by it, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE Eddie Poe, the old creep! I think it would have gone great with any of the Edgar Allan Poe stories and other literature we had to read. It was a wonderful story of murder set against the backdrop of the "affair of the poisons" in Paris. I shall have to attempt to find more Hoffman, once again I wish I knew German better so I could read him in the original! Based on intricate but false detective work (what will become an ongoing theme in Poe's Dupin stories), Hoffmann's police is equally wrong in his deductions.
The main character Mme de Scuderi was a great heroine, 73, sharp and compassionate, she was also a force to be reckoned with and even the King listened to her.

Hardly anyone else can handle the German language as vividly and at the same time as precisely as E.T.A. Kinda cute. Emo galore, yes, but many of his works actually do convey an old-school oppressing atmosphere.This was so interesting! It is funny, that there are so many similarities between a book from back then and a book from now. Magdaleine de Scudéri, so famous for her charming poetical and other writings, lived in a small mansion in the Rue St. Honoré, by favour of Louis the XIVth and Madame de Maintenon. Parisian goldsmith Monsieur Cardillac is a genius at his craft.

While not quite as action-packed as modern crime novels, it's still a page-turner. This short (90 pages) novella by Hoffman has been seen by many as an early, pre-Poe example of the detective story.

Hoffman or because in the view of many it is the first work of European detective fiction having been published in 1819 some 25 years become Edgar Allen Poe's "Purloined Letter.

The pacing of this novel is relentless; the plotting, highly intricate.I wasn't expecting to enjoy this, but in fact I didn't want to put it down! The plot was interesting, dramatic with lots of twists and turns.

Engaging and quick read.

The atmosphere was very dark and claustrophobic. Mademoiselle de Scuderi is the exciting tale of a crime wave in 1680 Paris. Olivier would confess that Cardillac was the murderer but he does not want to kill his beloved Madelon (Cardillac's daughter) with the knowledge of her father's guilt. One of the earliest examples of the classic murder mystery, Hoffman’s remarkable book has been the inspiration for a host of thriller and crime writers.
Great fun! As a result of the mysterious poisonings, an ad hoc tribunal, the Chambre ardente, is established to track down the perpetrators--a tribunal overseen by the bloodthirsty La Régnie (based on Gabriel Nicolas de la Reynie, the real-life founder of the first modern police force). Definitely one I'd recommend. I'm definitely interested in reading more of his works.Yeah I actually don't want to say much about it. In this novella, the 17th-century French women of letters and writer of endless prose romances, Mademoiselle de Scuderi (based on the real Scuderi) finds herself unwillingly and helplessly involved in a complicated web of criminal activity.
