A FOOTBALL club volunteer’s hard work on assisting Indigenous youth has been recognised by her peer.Wembley Junior Football Club pathways and NAIDOC co-ordinator Katherine Rogers is nominated for the community club volunteer award in the 2020 WA Football Volunteer of the Year program.Club girls’ co-ordinator Conor Mallen said he nominated Ms Rogers because she was in it for the long haul, despite only being involved with the club for about three years.Mr Mallen said Ms Rogers created a welcoming and supportive environment for Indigenous girls in the club.“The main reason is because she’s very passionate about football, about basically everyone, especially for the Aboriginal kids that we’ve got in the club,” he said.“It really brings our club closer to social issues in the community in a positive way.”As the pathways manager, Ms Rogers aims to give Wembley JFC players the opportunities to play up to a higher level of competition.Mr Mallen said Ms Rogers brought in relationships with other clubs, formed partnerships with schools and families while actively searching for new players.“Kathy has worked tirelessly to draw girls to our club from as close as Wembley Primary School to as far as Broome and beyond,” he said.“She’s always trying to involve other clubs in what she’s doing, she’s thinking about them.“The good thing is she talks to private and government schools.
