So first, Thank You to everyone who has posted information about these swaps! The engine was running pretty good but it would not pass emissions. There are many threads of peoples swaps and each one contains much information about things the person went through and all of them help people like me with little automotive know how. That means the Legacy driveshaft will be shortened to fit in there. Trans will be pulled sometime next week after work.Latest update, the legacy wiring harness is pulled and thinned down some. Built to last also! Getting on the frwy is always so much fun now. If you run oversized tires after the lift, you may not be able to fit your spare under the hood any more. Appearing from left to right: GL 5sp d/r, Legacy 5sp, Brat 4sp d/r. I am planning to fit an EJ with PT gearbox and a little bit of lift. Here are a few pics of the engine pulled.Empty (sorta) legacy engine bay. Also still need to find a proper fitting front crossmember to get power steering. I bought my first Subaru back in 2005, it was a 89 Brumby, flair red. Obviously having power steering will help out when offroading, but I dunno how soon it will be able happen. Then I had to drill out the threads on the top of the engine block to make my plate work. Also possibly being able to air down tires for future off road excursions could be usefull as well.I was thinking about air struts. Another thing is power steering. Note the size differences, the brat trans is 10" longer than the soon to be swapped in GL trans. An onboard air system would be way cool.In the process of moving to a new place the work on the brat came to a crawl. I was so psyched! You can see the curve on the back wheel. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated as far as what you have done to make AC work in your swaps and etc.you could make a set of "hybrid" A/C lines that meet the stock evaporator at the firewall and merge with the EJ compressor on the EJ22. Might settle in on some wiring Started to pull apart some of the legacy today. If you have a PT4WD 5sp the clutch should bolt to your modified flywheel and slot onto your gearboxes input shaft no worries using the 5sp’s thrust/throw out bearing. The Adapter plate is relatively easy to make on your own. One hole was slightly off and needed to be ground a little bigger. You might install an electric air compressor there.. good luck!Still trying to figure out the driveline issues because six states distributors wasn't really stoked to help make a driveline for a subaru. Anywho, more to come on that later. It is about an inch top short. I lifted it, fitted Kumho 27″ MT’s. Once I sold the Brumby I got a 83 Leone. Good luck and keep the pics coming! The swap stuff started about 2 days ago as I got the engine and trans pulled ready for selling, (4x4 Welder already is getting the trans). Got my adapter plate in after a few slight adjustments.

Dutch oven lid lifter held between PP bolts to hold the flywheel in place as i use my Harbor Freight breaker bar to get things tight. You need to be a member in order to leave a commentSign up for a new account in our community. More pictures and random writings to come as things get pieced together. Maybe one day I will be able to post a picture of my brat out on at least the road, hopefully a dirt one.If you run oversized tires after the lift, you may not be able to fit your spare under the hood any more. I haven't had AC in any of my vehicles for a really long time so its not as if I will be missing it. He said "no subaru is worth that much effort". Possibly low compression, possibly just a vacuum line. Hopefully I will get my flywheel redrilled in the next few days. Tomorrow I am getting the 5sp d/r from the junkyard (half off wednesdays!!! I'm thinking of starting another ej swap project too. I tend to pinch flat tires a lot while I am biking and having air would be handy for that. Going up hill accelerating in 5th gear is a blast. Instead of chasing things around I got the wife's permission to start my swap. Converted it to 4WD, put the Kumho’s on it, added a 5sp and drove it like I stole it. I still get a kick out of swapping 200k+ engines into a car and thinking nothing of it. New to the forums and I figured I should post my own process of doing the EJ22 swap. After a while I swapped the dual carb EA81 it had with an EJ22 bolted on a custom gearbox which used EJ D/R casing, EA82 5sp low range and an RX centre locking diff. I lifted it, fitted Kumho 27″ MT’s. So for those of you who care, Pull and Save in West Valley Utah considers subaru d/r trans as a transmission and a transfer case. Rusted, 1992 Legacy, 202k miles, manual 5sp, AWD. Also getting a 5sp, d/r for the swap as well. He said "no subaru is worth that much effort". Hope all goes well for you! Started playing with wires, got frustrated again and stopped. I am having troubles finding the proper crossmember and power steering rack that isn't too wide. I now have a 87 Brumby that I’ve resprayed with two pack urethane in Waratah Red. Along with a jig saw and drill.A must look is Numbchux’s EA2EJ EJ conversion write up. Sucks for me because it ended up costing the same as a trans would have at the junkyard down the street. Should make for a great combination. Long live the EJ22. Good looking build and good looking Brat. Long live indeed!Latest update: EJ22 engine pulled and chilling in the brats engine bay dangling from the hoist. The guy at DD machining did a great job. Here are some pics of goodies picked up at the junkyard today, and a few fun transmission pictures.Snazzy subwoofer for under the seat or something if I can figure how to wire it up.The legacy transmission (held up by radio flyer, been in my family for as long as I can remember)Transmissions. This is the relatively easy part of the EJ conversion. For the new EJ22 to bolt to your existing gearbox you will either need a 12mm thick adapter plate which will allow the EJ to fit on the EA82 or EA81 gearbox. Here is the current shot of how my donor car looks. On an AWESOME note, I have found about $9 in spare change when I pulled out the center console. Also this brat will primarily be used just around town and off-roading.
