A relatively short volume, about 45 poems, and also relatively short poems.

The memorializing became trite after a while, even though "Two Wise Generals" and the final poem in the collection unarguably include some profound ideas. Ted Hughes' first book of published poems, dedicated to his wife Sylvia Plath (who was instrumental in getting it published, as I understand). His most characteristic verse is without sentimentality, emphasizing the cunning and savagery of animal life in harsh, sometimes disjunctive lines.Edward James Hughes was an English poet and children's writer, known as Ted Hughes. Powerful, striking stuff.Nature is no longer a bucolic splendor. The Hawk in the Rain is a collection of poems by the British poet Ted Hughes. Powerful and resounding.

A relatively short volume, about 45 poems, and also relatively short poems. Originally published in 1957, Hawk in the Rain was the first collection of poems by Ted Hughes. Splendid and flawless.Ted Hughes first collection, dark and broody, something that would continue for the rest of his career.

Published in 1957, Hawk in the Rain was Ted Hughes's first collection of poems. It's stayed with me ever since, and I keep dipping into it over the years. I felt a flavour of TS Eliot in these poems when first dipping into the volume, and wasn't surprised by the interesting tidbit in the front of the booAs a debut collection, and the first poems I've read written by Ted Hughes, my enjoyment of the poems was erratic.

But re-reading this, with a sense of real shock, it doesn't seem as good as I thought it was (for decades!).

Incompatibles It is beautiful yes, but it is savage and predatory and brutal.you can see why people heralded him as such a talentThe title poem is so good that it made me forget all the others. It would be interesting to see how I feel about his poetry after I got into the whole poetry stuff a little pit more. The eponymous first poem alone is amazing, absolutely mesmerising in the lyrical beauty, power and violence of its imagery. It's stayed with me ever since, and I keep dipping into it over the years. They all have to start somewhere, and for Ted Hughes this was the breakout work that made him a famous figure.

Two Wise Generals (The edition I read is not the one listed here, but ISBN 978-0-571-32281-7)I need to read some of the poems again.

This book shaped the environmental concerns and the concern for nature that would dominate Hughes for the rest of his writing life. The book received immediate acclaim in both England and America, where it won the Galbraith Prize. Will reflect on at a later re read.An absolute pleasure to reread this for an essay on animal theory. The Casualty I thoroughly enjoyed the first few poems in this collection.

Childbirth An interesting shift towards the end towards poetryFound some poems hard to grasp.

This is the book that introduced me to poetry, and the reason why Ted Hughes is my favourite poet. Many of Hughes’s best-known poems, such as ‘The Hawk in the Rain,’ ‘The Jaguar,’ ‘The Thought-Fox,’ and ‘Wind’—now … Somewhat obscure at times, only a few didn't worked for me, but most of the time he wrote these poems with gusto. Although the 'Hawk in the Rain' collection is revered as among his best work, by far my favourite collection of Hughes poems is 'Crow: From the life and songs of the Crow." It's really difficult to rate poetry compilations.

I have yet to read anything with such stark imagery and varied metaphors. I'm giving it 3 rather than 2 stars because I probably didn't pay as close attention to the book as I usually like to with poetry.

Unfortunately, I believe Hughes' writing becomes more arcane and ambiguous throughout theTed Hughes may have been an abusive turdbag who influenced the suicides of two different women, but hoo doggy, can he write some evocative poetry. The Hag

Still some of his words provocte feelings in me.
It is a collection of poems composed on a wide range of subjects, mixing nature poems and those that deal with raw emotion and love, all closely associated with Hughes's early life.

Read this first in a college poetry class. These poems were definitely transporting and inspiring. It is a collection of poems composed on a wide range of subjects, mixing nature poems and those that deal with raw emotion and love, all closely associated with Hughes's early life.
