Processes of economic restructuring have etched the contours of inequality more deeply into the European landscape, at several spatial scales: between countries, between cities, and between regions within countries; and within cities and regions (Bennett et al. This is the second of a series of papers on the reform and economic restructuring in the Chinese countryside, using Yuhang, Zhejiang, as a case study. Influenced by this work our research was designed to examine regeneration activities in a sample of regional towns and to add a stronger New Zealand perspective to the small-town regeneration literature. Our first article deals in detail the process of reform and economic restructuring in Yuhang (Xu and Tan, 2001).

It has profound implications for productive capacities and competitiveness of cities and regions.

In the western world, it is usually used to refer to the phenomenon of urban areas shifting from a manufacturing to a service sector economic base. However, the rise of private industries has caused an economic gap between social groups, particularly the local entrepreneurs and migrant workers. regeneration efforts can create positive change in regional towns and their rural hinterlands (Powe, Pringle, & Hart, 2015; Spires & Moore, 2017).

Abstract. The reform-induced industrialization and urbanization have also rapidly altered the physical landscape at the local level, as evidenced by the substantial rate of rural housing development, rural to urban migration, and agricultural to non-agricultural land conversion. We use cookies to help provide and enhance our service and tailor content and ads.

Economically resilient towns, cities, and regions adapt to changing conditions and even reinvent their economic bases if necessary. As an outcome of globalisation, geographers and demographers have noted the significant demise of small towns. While we note that peasant living conditions have been improved, particularly in the 1990s, we argue that such progress has been an outcome of agricultural and industrial production at the household level rather than simply from the rapidly growing township and village enterprises as it is generally believed. The impact is assessed through a case study of Yuhang, Zhejiang, by focusing on the changing economic landscape and rural–urban relationship in China during the reform period.

The implementation of Mikhail Gorbachev’s glasnost (political liberalization) and perestroika (economic restructuring) policies in the Soviet Union fueled sentiment in Germany that reunification could become a reality, and the basic steps toward German economic unity were accomplished with astonishing speed. This paper examines the impact of the 20-year process on Yuhang's rural system.

Empirical evidence also suggests that significant proportions of economic transactions are carried out through the regional, national and international economy. Establishing the degree to which a settlement is integrated into its locality provides an indication of its contemporary functions and potential role in rural development. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the economic and social impact of rural reform and economic restructuring in China. In contrast to the macro-level trend, the growing economy has reduced the overall spatial disparity, and produced a fairly even economic landscape in Yuhang. Participated by both local peasants and outside migrants, urbanization has rapidly penetrated into localities, traditionally referred to as rural, in a “hidden” form, through which people's interactive space is enlarged and villagers become urbanites in activity and behaviour. Hence, the closure of a major business in a small regional centre is likely to have a larger impact on the surrounding community than would the closure of a similar operation in a capital city (Productivity Commission 1999a: 21). Over recent years, socio-economic restructuring has tended to undermine the traditional functions of small rural towns. In this paper, reliable measures of economic linkages are developed, and it is shown that the strength of local integration is a function of the existing economic structure of the town as well as its proximity to metropolitan centres. We use cookies to improve your website experience.
