Nobody really knows.JULY: So what are we to think of men like him? It’s felt like climbing up a mountain every day without ever seeing the summit. And I sort of went away from it for a while in high school and college, when I was pursuing sports and school and, I guess, girls. If you really want to tell someone you love them, you don’t just go and blurt it out. On a dreary winter’s day in London, the director finds himself on the final leg of a furious 18-month sprint to bring No Time to Die, the latest installment in the everlasting James Bond saga, to theaters.
I wasn’t sure if I had what it took. What else can I tell you?JULY: Do you have any dietary restrictions? [MOORE: I really wanted people to see the film before the 2004 election. You see a channel that’s interesting, and they fly by it.JULY: Do you find yourself telling yourself to do things?FUKUNAGA: Definitely. I don’t know how it comes out, but at least the way I look at the government and what the government did to my family… It takes the wool from your eyes about how the world works, to show you that nothing’s necessarily fair, and that you might have a hard life. And sometime around 20, 21 years old, I was in France and had blown out my knee. I started writing stories when I was 9 or 10. This is the big question these days, isn’t it? I get asked this a lot. Basically everyone of Japanese ancestry was put into these camps during World War II—except for, ironically, those in Hawaii, because they needed the labor. MOORE: I actually think there’s something that happens when you’re in a room with a lot of other people in the dark watching it on a big screen—especially with comedy. I have aspirations of making a big, historical epic.
But then you get, “Well, why don’t you show a positive side of Africa?
Cary Fukunaga Tells Miranda July How Bond Nearly Broke Him What’s a question that you have been fearing or hoping somebody would ask but haven’t yet heard?FUKUNAGA: It’s really hard to make a film about this subject matter with the knowledge I have of Africa, knowing that it portrays Africa, or some version of Africa, in chaos. I’m wondering if it was timed for Easter, seeing how Jesus also had no time to die.FUKUNAGA: No, I think that all came about through desperation. It’s an important part of being a member of society to know what’s happening in the world and to know where you fall in it and what you can do about it. You have all these muscles and superpowers coming off what you just did. Not that I consider Bond an equivalent of my life or my romantic life at all, but what I was able to process this year definitely is part of what goes into this story.JULY: When I sit down with a good friend I haven’t seen in a while, I want some sense of order to our conversation, so I often ask, “What are your top-three concerns?” Can you give me a version of that for you right now?FUKUNAGA: Can you say that one more time in simpler terms?JULY: What’s keeping you up at night, besides this movie?FUKUNAGA: This movie is taking up so much air. People still talk and think about FUKUNAGA: That was a pretty amazing night, other than my blackout in front of however many millions of people there.FUKUNAGA: I’ve definitely heard it. I don’t know if the general audience really cares anymore. I don’t really wash my face that often. I wrote my first screenplay-type document when I was 14, about these two brothers in the Civil War.
And I think you probably know this, too: When you know you have a certain amount of work to finish, you just don’t allow yourself to get sick again.MOORE: Right. I mean, I want people to see my movies in a movie theater, primarily. Storytelling-wise, I think the structure of MOORE: Wouldn’t you love to go back through a time tunnel to be there on the set when he made FUKUNAGA: Yeah. The announcement came just days after our interview. We want to be taken a place we haven’t been. What are you going to go do now?FUKUNAGA: I’ve got one more phone call, and then I want to go home and just—
Little boys are like, “I want to be a man like that.” And I always want to be like, “There may actually not be any men like that.”FUKUNAGA: It’s hard to say. Interview Magazine: The Crystal Ball of Pop How does it feel to be you? It’s not the same as having been there, experiencing the same thing the character has experienced, but there’s something about being associated with that imagery, with that information, that can, long term, affect your psyche. I thought MOORE: What haven’t you been asked? You go out afterward. My uncles were born in a camp. My thesis was about two museum exhibits at the Smithsonian. Something I hadn’t realized, even until now, is how far in advance studios swoop up these windows for their films to come out, in order to give them the best chance of having a good box office.JULY: I watched the trailer, and there’s a moment when someone says, “You have no idea what this is, do you?”JULY: That made me think that maybe this movie moves into a metaphysical, spiritual realm. I understand that you got sick during the pre-production on MOORE: I was trying to think of a polite way to put that. It’s a very different experience watching a comedy by yourself at home or in a room full of people, because of the sort of infectious nature of laughter. I tried to make movies with my friends, but it was impossible because no one cared as much as I did.
I wouldn’t say I know every facet of Daniel Craig, even after having worked with him for almost a year, but I can definitely say for a fact, the manliest man I’ve worked with was Idris Elba.JULY: So Daniel Craig would be below him in manliness?JULY: Well, that’s reassuring. So it took a lot of prodding from me to get them to talk about it. Your movie does that in a very powerful way.
