But no, this film is so much more than just a visual marvel; it works, quite well actually, as a brilliant metaphor for the horrors resting deep within human nature that date all the way back to the genesis of mankind.

Against all my better judgement I sat captivated by this film. I suppose that in a sense it's worthy of that statement, but it really depends on what kind of person you are or what you find disturbing. That to me is the film's main flaw and it is a big one. Short I still enjoy finding visually-driven shorts and avante-garde films to splice with my own music. The only thing feelgood about this movie is that you, no matter how rock-bottom depressed, are thankful to be alive after stopping this tape 15 min. This has (whether Merhige ever saw him or not) echoes of Patrick Bokanowski's silhouettes and grotesques, and also it evokes the chthonic costuming of Zulawski's aliens in However, what seems most Bokanowskian about this is that it eschews traditional narrative devices all together (unlike Lynch, whose most notable works at…In order to rewrite myth a film must also rewrite language. This is an experimental film, and I've never been especially fond of films that fall into this genre. As a big fan of 'Shadow Of The Vampire' I was curious to watch Merhige's previous movie 'Begotten', especially as it has a reputation as one of the most disturbing and uncompromising movies ever made.
Begotten is the creation myth brought to life, the story of no less than the violent death of God and the (re)birth of nature on a barren earth. And gory.
