The notion of dividing the ethnological record into To account for cultural variation, Tylor and other early evolutionists postulated that Tylor believed that there was a kind of psychic unity among all peoples that explained parallel evolutionary sequences in different cultural traditions. /F3 12 0 R Why, for example, are some societies today lodged in “upper savagery” and others in “civilization.” The “psychic unity of mankind” or “germs of thought” that were postulated to account for parallel evolution cannot also account for cultural differences.
As a result, three anthropological grounded theories emerged: Distance Management Theory, Responsibility Management Theory, and Memory Management Theory. Armchair anthropologists were important in the development of anthropology as a discipline in the late nineteenth century because although these early scholars were not directly experiencing the cultures they were studying, their work did ask important questions—questions that could ultimately only be answered by going into the field.Figure 3.1.1. /Parent 2 0 R

December 2016. During the colonial era from the sixteenth century to the mid–twentieth century, European countries (Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, Dutch Republic, Spain, Portugal) asserted control over land (Asia, Africa, the Americas) and people. They left us a legacy of at least three basic assumptions which have become an integral part of anthropological thought and research methodology, as outlined by Kaplan (1972: 42-43):Morgan believed that family units became progressively smaller and more self-contained as human society developed. The guides to anthropological theories and approaches presented here have been prepared by anthropology (and other) graduate students of the University of Alabama under the direction of Dr. Michael D. Murphy.. Only manuscripts of sufficient quality that meet the aims and scope of Anthropological Theory will be reviewed. Also, although other societies may have progressed to “civilization,” some of them have not passed through all the stages. Over the course of subsequent years these modules were periodically updated by a succession of students in a graduate seminar on the history of theory in cultural anthropology; the last updates were posted in 2012.There are no plans to add to these modules and major updates are not anticipated. Lucy Mair (1969), in a review of Marvin Harris's The rise of anthropological theory (1969), peremptorily castigated his approach by questioning the integrity of the anthro-pological theory that had arisen. Its leading opponent was Franz Boas, whose main disagreement with the evolutionists involved their assumption that universal laws governed all human culture. Hays, H. Both French and Scottish social and moral philosophers were using evolutionary schemes during the 18th century. Boas argued that these nineteenth-century individuals lacked sufficient data (as did Boas himself) to formulate many useful generalizations. Finally, the stage of civilization was distinguished by the monogamous family, with just one wife and one husband who were relatively equal in status.Although their works sought similar ends, the evolutionary theorists each had very different ideas about and foci for their studies. This method requires that an anthropologist participate in a social event that is part of a specific culture. The fourth stage, which supposedly evolved during barbarism, was characterized by a loosely paired male and female who lived with other people.
When early anthropologists studied people from other civilizations, they relied on the written accounts and opinions of others; they presented facts and developed their “stories,” about other cultures based solely on information gathered by others. >>
